The Social Mission:

To popularise handloom cloth and to redress the grievances of the millions of weavers (1953), the front line leaders like Dr. Anna, Dr. Kalingnar and others personally sold Handloom cloth in Public places.

The positive efforts in mitigating the sufferings of people affected by storm and flood in Thanjavur (1954), won the hearts of many.

During the Chinese Aggression (1962), despite its differences with Congress Party, the DMK extended support to the Govt. Of India and earnestly contributed funds to the National Defence Fund. Above all, in a major political decision Dr. Anna put the country and its integrity before his party and gave up the demand for Dravida Nadu. It was another milestone in the National outlook of DMK.

During Indo-Pakisthan war (1971) the DMK Govt. Led by Dr. Kalaignar (in fact, the only state government in India) collected public contributions of Rs.6 Crores for National Defence Fund.

To show that DMK is second to none in national defence, during the recent Pakistan troops' intrusion in Kargil sector, Dr. Kalaignar has collected Rs.50.43 crores on behalf of Tamilnadu killed in the Kargil conflict. No other state, no other chief minister in India has done so far to our soldiers.

Besides social services, the party continues its charity measures outside the Government. The DMK Charitable Trust founded by Dr. Kalaignar in 1972, runs a research library, a free eye hospital, helps the poor affected by natural calamites like fire, floor and earth quake in and out side India, and provides financial assistance of more than Rs. 15 lakhs per annum for the education of poor children and for the higher education of meritorious children who have studied Tamil as first language and secured rank in the Plus Two Examinations.
